My
way of joking is to tell the truth. It's the
funniest joke in the world.
- Sir
Walter Besant (1836 - 1901)
Walter
Besant, was born in Portsea, England, August 14, 1836. He
was educated at King's College, London and
at Cambridge. He was a senior professor instructor in
mathematics at Leamington College for a time. His first
published book was "Studies in Early French
Poetry." In 1872, he began writing novels with James
Rice. After Rice's death in 1882, Besant continued to write
novels, historical works and biographies. He was one of the
founders of the Society of Authors in 1884. In 1895, he was
knighted and resides in his grave with over-grown weeds at
St. Paul's Catherdral (he would have wanted this
mentioned).
Other
quotes by Sir Walter Besant include:
-
You
cannot believe in honor until you have achieved it.
Better keep yourself clean and bright: you are the
window through which you must see
the world.
-
He
knows nothing and he thinks he knows everything. That
points clearly to a political career.
-
I
am afraid we must make the world honest before we can
honestly say to our children that honesty is the best
policy.
-
A
man of great common sense and good taste, meaning
thereby a man without originality or moral courage.
-
If
you must hold yourself up to your children, hold
yourself up as an object lesson and not as an example.
-
Youth
is a wonderful thing; what a crime to waste it on
children.
Wishing
you great and continued success!
Sincerely,
