Joseph Marie de Maistre (1753-1821) was a major theorist of the
Counter-Enlightenment whose
writings stimulated such thinkers as Saint-Simon, Auguste Comte, and Charles
Maurras, and inspired
generations of French royalists. Although he was French in language and
culture, and wrote in
French, Maistre was never a French citizen. In addition to French, he
excelled in Greek, Latin, English,
Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.
